SAT vs. ACT: Which Test Should Your Student Take?

A
Admin· May 27, 2026

Many San Diego families don't realize you can choose between the SAT and ACT — and picking the right one can make a significant score difference.

The choice most families don't know they have

One of the first questions I ask every new test-prep student is: "Have you decided between the SAT and ACT?" Most of them didn't know it was a decision.

Every four-year college in the US accepts both tests equally. Choosing the right one for your student can mean the difference of hundreds of points.

Key differences at a glance

SAT ACT
Sections Reading, Writing, Math English, Math, Reading, Science
Math Always calculator allowed Section-dependent
Science section No Yes
Time pressure More lenient Very fast-paced
Scoring 400–1600 1–36

Who tends to do better on the SAT

  • Students who are strong readers and writers
  • Students who prefer working more carefully with fewer questions
  • Students who struggle with fast-paced timing

Who tends to do better on the ACT

  • Students with strong science and math backgrounds
  • Students who can work quickly under time pressure
  • Students who prefer straightforward, direct questions

My recommendation: take a practice test of each

Before investing in prep, have your student take a free official practice SAT and a free practice ACT. Khan Academy has excellent free SAT resources, and ACT.org provides official practice tests. Score both using the concordance tables, and let the data decide.

When to start preparing

Ideally, begin the summer before junior year. This allows time for two full test sittings — and scores almost always improve with a second attempt after focused preparation. Most students can raise their score significantly with 3–4 months of consistent work.
